Cade Cunningham is taking a page out of Luka Doncic's offseason playbook as the Detroit Pistons prepare for the 2026-27 NBA season.
According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, Cunningham is leading a players-run minicamp in San Diego this week, bringing his Pistons teammates together for offseason work before the start of official training camp.
The gathering comes after Detroit's breakthrough 2025-26 season ended in painful fashion.
The Pistons recorded their first 60-win campaign in 20 years before being eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
After coming so close to the conference finals, Cunningham is now taking the initiative to bring the group together ahead of another season with increased expectations.
Cunningham follows Doncic's offseason approach
The idea is similar to what Doncic is currently doing with the Los Angeles Lakers in Slovenia.
Luka invited almost the entire Lakers roster to his home country for a multi-day minicamp designed to combine basketball work with team bonding.
Los Angeles has held several practices at Stozice Arena under assistant coach Greg St. Jean, while Doncic also organized several activities away from basketball.
The Lakers' itinerary has included team dinners, sightseeing, a visit to Bled, golf and other activities aimed at helping a reshaped roster build chemistry before training camp.
Cunningham coming off another All-NBA season
Cunningham enters the minicamp after another standout season as Detroit's franchise leader.
The 24-year-old guard averaged 23.9 points, 9.9 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 64 regular-season games, shooting 46.1% from the field. He earned his second All-Star selection and was named to an All-NBA team for the second straight season.
Cunningham elevated his production further in the playoffs, averaging 28.1 points, 7.5 assists, and 5.1 rebounds across 14 games while shooting 40.2% from the three-point range.
The former No. 1 overall pick has now spent five seasons with Detroit and owns career averages of 22.5 points, 8.0 assists, and 5.4 rebounds.
