Premier League big spenders Manchester City are being linked with a shock move for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong ahead of the final week of the transfer window.

The news comes from El Chiringuito’s Jose Alvarez and an update that claims the Cityzens could go for the Dutchman.

Alvarez has posted on X: “City likes De Jong a lot. They really like De Jong. They want to keep strengthening their midfield. They’re analyzing his physical condition and will decide if they’ll make an offer for him this week. But there’s a lot of interest.”

De Jong is currently out with a knee ligament injury and it’s not known yet when he is expected to return. Yet when he does, he faces real competition for a place, particularly after Barca signed Rodri.

As for City, the club have already spent over £100 million to sign Elliot Anderson and are also set to invest heavily in Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Yet Enzo Maresca hinted at more signings and the need for “a new Rodri” after his team’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth yesterday.
