After more than a year of attempts, Arsenal have reportedly completed a deal to sign highly rated Blackburn Rovers striker Igor Tyjon, with the 18-year-old set to continue his development in north London.
The Gunners have tracked Tyjon for several transfer windows and had previously seen approaches rejected by Blackburn. Earlier reports suggested Arsenal failed with an offer during the January window, while Blackburn were also said to have turned down significantly larger proposals for the young forward as interest in his potential continued to grow.
The latest reports indicate that Arsenal have now reached an agreement with Blackburn to bring the England youth international to the club. The financial package is understood to include an initial payment of £1.2 million, with a further £2 million in potential add-ons. Blackburn will also retain a 20 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement. Reports elsewhere have placed the overall deal in the region of £3 million, reflecting slight differences in the reported structure of the transfer.
Tyjon reportedly completed his medical over the weekend, clearing one of the final obstacles before the move can be formally announced. The teenager had become a long-term target for Arsenal, who were believed to have identified him as a potential replacement within their youth setup following Chido Obi-Martin’s departure for Manchester United last summer.
The move is expected to see Tyjon initially join ARSENAL’s academy structure rather than immediately challenge for a place in Mikel Arteta’s senior squad.
Despite his age, however, the striker has already gained valuable experience at youth and senior level with Blackburn and has represented England across several age groups. He has also featured for Blackburn’s first team, giving Arsenal another promising young forward to develop.
Arsenal’s pursuit of Tyjon has been complicated by his contractual situation at Ewood Park. Reports earlier this month claimed the player had declined professional terms and was keen to secure a move to the Emirates, while Blackburn initially remained reluctant to sell. There had even been suggestions that the situation could require further intervention before the two clubs eventually reached an agreement.
The transfer represents another investment in Arsenal’s future, with the club continuing to place importance on strengthening its academy pipeline alongside its pursuit of established first-team talent.
For Tyjon, the move offers an opportunity to take the next major step in his career at one of England’s leading development environments. ARSENAL will now hope their persistence pays off and that the teenager can follow the path of other young talents who have progressed through the club’s ranks into senior football.
