Dominik Szoboszlai’s 99th-minute penalty rescued Liverpool a draw against Newcastle United.
Dominik Szoboszlai had high praise for Newcastle United fans after he scored a late penalty to rescue a point for Liverpool on the opening day of the new Premier League season.
The clock had just ticked past the five minutes of allocated stoppage time when Lewis Hall was penalised for a foul on Victor Munoz in the box. Szoboszlai then coolly stepped up to make it 2-2 in the 99th minute.
After both sets of supporters paid a wonderful tribute to Kevin Keegan, who sadly passed away last month, the match got underway and the Magpies took the lead just five minutes in through Anthony Elanga.
Cody Gakpo equalised early in the second half, but the Reds were level for just two minutes as Joe Willock scored immediately after coming on as a substitute. That looked to be the winner until referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot.
Dominik Szoboszlai’s high praise for Newcastle United fans
Szoboszlai may have sent a dagger to the hearts of Newcastle fans, but he was full of praise for them after the game, labelling their support as “unbelievable”.
The 25-year-old said: “I don’t know how many in the stadium... 50,000 [fans] against you. You can’t hear your own voice but that’s why we love football, that’s why I love football, that’s why I am doing it.
“Obviously, to come here is always a tough game. First game of the season, away to Newcastle, everyone knows that the fans are unbelievable. They have a great team, a good manager, obviously he’s new but he has shown himself at many other clubs.
“We were prepared but with a new manager as well, we need to get even more closer to each other and know what is going on during the game. It’s a good step after going behind 2-1.”
While those kind words will be appreciated by Newcastle supporters, his view that Liverpool deserved to win the game certainly will not be.
“If I am honest, yes,” he said. “I think we were able to win but that’s football. You don’t win easy in the Premier League, it doesn’t matter who you play. They were a good team, scored two transitional goals.”
