Keith Lee and Tyrese Haliburton Host Gary Storm Relief Event
Food critic and social media personality Keith Lee is partnering with Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton, the City of Gary, The Salvation Army and Ace Hardware for a free community relief event for Gary residents impacted by recent severe storms.
The effort began after Lee shared a social media video highlighting storm damage in Gary and calling for support. Lee committed $15,000 to the relief effort, while Haliburton matched the contribution, bringing their combined donations to $30,000.
The event will provide relief supplies, community resources and free food from local food trucks, with music from DJ K Ceasar.
The event is scheduled for Monday, August 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Roosevelt Pavilion Parking Lot, 2201 Harrison St., Gary, Indiana.
The event is free and open to the community. Relief kits will be distributed while supplies last, with one kit per household and a maximum of two households per vehicle. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets.
It’s been over a week without power in Gary, Indiana. The loss of power is a direct result of storms that traveled through the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana area. The area has been pummeled by strong storms and tornadoes all summer, climaxing in last week’s derecho.
However, Gary is in the worst condition. According to Chicago Sun-Times, neighboring Gary’s streets are still littered with down trees and stoplights being out. Some citizens have been without power since August 11.
Some residents in Gary use well water, which requires electricity to pump through their home. This results in some homes not having water access. Speaking on the current conditions, Kimberly Guajardo stated, “Were living in the 1700s but we’re making it work.”
Over 100,000 people in Northwest Indiana are without power. The original number was 300,000. It is the most widespread power outage in history.
