Coventry City are set to sign highly-rated Manchester City youngster Stephen Mfuni on loan until the end of the season, according to Ben Jacobs on X.

The 18-year-old defender spent last season on loan at Watford in the Championship, but is now expected to spend the season with the Sky Blues in the top flight.

Who is Stephen Mfuni?

Mfuni is just 18 years of age, and has only been playing at senior level since the start of 2026.

Born in Wigan, Mfuni signed for the Manchester City academy in 2016, aged just eight, and spent ten years in the Citizens’ youth ranks which was highlighted by a goal in the 2023/24 FA Youth Cup final, which Man City won, beating Leeds United 4-0.

On 10th January 2026, Mfuni made his senior debut for Man City, coming on at half time for Nathan Aké in their 10-1 win over Exeter City in the FA Cup.

20 days later, Mfuni was sent out on loan to Championship side Watford, following the recall of fellow Man City youngster Max Alleyne from the Hornets.

During his time in the second-tier, Mfuni made eight appearances, playing predominately as a centre back, but also played as a left back.

Now back at Man City, new manager Enzo Maresca has decided that another loan is suitable for the youngster, and Coventry seems to be the destination.

What role will Mfuni play for Coventry?

Frank Lampard sets his team up in a back four, meaning Mfuni could slot in as one of the two central defenders, or may fill in at left back.

With right back Milan van Ewijk being such an attacking player, often finding himself in the final third, there may be a temptation to use Mfuni at left back and ask him to form a back three with the two starting centre backs, giving the Sky Blues defensive stability while van Ewijk gets forward.

As a centre back, Mfuni would likely be a backup for Aurèle Amenda, who signed from Eintract Frankfurt earlier this summer.
