NFL Rumors
After being met with loud boos from Cleveland Browns fans, the latest NFL rumors project the team could consider releasing former first-round pick Deshaun Watson. The veteran returned for the first time in Cleveland’s preseason home game since tearing his Achilles. However, fans were vocal, booing the QB, which the former Clemson product did not appreciate. Browns head coach Todd Monken said postgame comments from this weekend won’t be a deciding factor in Cleveland’s next starter. While Monken will announce QB1 this week, here’s what the veteran QB said:
“Last time I played on this field, I tore my Achilles. And that same fanbase, they cheered when I got hurt,” Watson said. “So what does that have to do with anything about performance? When a person gets hurt, especially for your own city, and they cheer?”
Watson and Shedeur Sanders have been competing for the starting quarterback role, but it has not been easy on the former first-rounder. Since joining Cleveland, the veteran has failed to recapture the potential he had in Houston. He has also been a polarizing figure since being accused of inappropriate misconduct in 2022.

Evaluating Watson’s Play
The former Texan has not been able to establish himself in Cleveland. Since joining the Browns, he has faced injuries and off-field distractions from fans.
It’s safe to evaluate his play for this post, but it’s fair to say he could have a hard time finding a new team if released. What has ignited a potential release is the latest comments from Monken this weekend:
“I don’t want to get booed. It comes with the territory. You don’t want to get booed? Let’s play good football. Let’s play good at quarterback. Let’s play good on offense. Let’s play good as a team. And then you don’t have to worry about all that because it can turn just like that,” Monken said.
It would not be surprising if Sanders is named the starter, while the Browns may be close to releasing Watson.
