Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile has completed a season-long loan move to Serie A side Napoli, bringing an end—at least temporarily—to a mixed three-and-a-half-year spell at Stamford Bridge.
The 25-year-old French international, capped twice by his country, joined Chelsea from Monaco in January 2023 and went on to make 71 appearances in all competitions for the Blues. His departure was confirmed by Chelsea on Sunday, while Napoli announced that the agreement includes an option to make the transfer permanent.
Badiashile arrived in west London with a growing reputation as one of France’s most promising central defenders and made an encouraging start to life in the Premier League. However, recurring injury problems and fierce competition for places restricted his opportunities, with his most recent campaign particularly disrupted.
He made only eight league appearances last season, according to reports, and the move to Italy offers the defender the opportunity to rebuild momentum and secure more regular first-team football.
Napoli have moved to strengthen their defensive options as they prepare for the new Serie A campaign, and Badiashile’s arrival adds significant experience at both domestic and European level. The 1.94m centre-back brings physicality and left-footed balance to the squad, having previously played more than 100 senior matches for Monaco before his move to England.
Reports in Italy suggest Napoli will pay a loan fee for Badiashile and hold an option to buy at the end of the season, although the precise financial structure has varied between outlets. One report placed the purchase option at €20 million, with the overall figure potentially rising through bonuses and add-ons.
Speaking after the move, Badiashile described joining Napoli as “a great honour”, saying he was ready to give everything for the shirt and the city as he begins the next chapter of his career.
For CHELSEA, the loan represents another step in reshaping their defensive group, while Napoli will hope Badiashile can rediscover the form that made him such a highly regarded prospect during his Monaco years.
Whether the Frenchman’s stay in Naples extends beyond the 2026-27 season will depend on his performances, but the season-long move gives Badiashile a clear opportunity to revive his career and establish himself as a key figure in Italian football.
