**Liverpool were held to a draw by Newcastle United yesterday as Andoni Iraola only managed to get a point on his first Premier League game in charge of the club.**
The Reds showed a lot of courage to come from behind twice through Cody Gakpo and Dom Szoboszlai and will take some positives from the fighting spirit they showed at a tricky away ground.
However, in terms of their performance, they left a lot to be desired, particularly in midfield.
And Jamie Carragher feels the Reds need more bodies in the centre of the park to function better as a unit.
Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch started in midfield, with Florian Wirtz stationed as a No.10.
And it’s safe to say the Liverpool trio were run ragged in Tyneside as they were picked apart in transition.
At times, it looked like each of their midfielders was more focused on bombing forward as opposed to dictating play and keeping it tight, which worked to Newcastle’s advantage.
Carragher called out Iraola’s midfield setup earlier in the season and doubled down on his claims with a tweet after the game.
“Again! This midfield cannot work, I said it before a competitive ball was kicked,” wrote the Liverpool legend.
There have been calls for a new midfielder at Anfield – especially after Curtis Jones’ departure – but it doesn’t look like any will be forthcoming.
