QUINCY (WGEM) - Barring a miracle, quarterback Skylar Thompson’s season is over before it began.
The Baltimore Ravens placed Thompson -- the son of former Palmyra, Missouri, boys basketball coach Brad Thompson -- on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury last week, the team announced.
Unless Baltimore releases Thompson with an injury settlement, he will be ineligible to play this season.
Thompson signed with the Ravens in May to compete for a backup role, but looked unlikely to overtake Tyler Huntley for the No. 2 job behind starter Lamar Jackson.
He received no guaranteed money on his one-year, $1.15 million deal, whereas the Ravens gave Huntley $3.5 million in full guarantees on a one-year, $5 million contract.
Thompson is the second NFL player with local ties to be placed on injured reserve. Last week, New England reached any injury settlement with former Culver-Stockton College offensive lineman Andrew Rupcich.
Thompson, a 2022 seventh round draft pick from Kansas State, spent his first three years in Miami. He made 10 appearances and three starts in the regular season as a member of the Dolphins, with whom he completed just 58.7 percent of passes with one touchdown and three interceptions.
He also started an AFC Wild Card game in January 2023 in Buffalo as Miami turned to the rookie as injuries sidelined Tua Tagovaloia and Teddy Bridgewater. The Dolphins almost pulled an upset losing 34-31 as Thompson completed 18 of 45 for 220 yards, a TD and two interceptions
After serving as the Dolphins’ No. 2 quarterback two years ago, Thompson settled for a reserve/futures deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers in January 2025.
Thompson had a rough go last year as he went on IR with a hamstring injury in September. Later that month, during the Pittsburgh’s Week 4 trip to Dublin, Ireland, Thompson was assaulted and robbed. The 29-year-old did not suffer serious injuries in that incident, but he never got into a game with the Steelers.
Now as Thompson tries to recover from another injury, it appears this could be his second consecutive lost season.
