Manchester United have agreed to loan out one of their strikers and surprise interest from Everton has come to nothing, according to reports.
Man Utd may well sign a new striker in the final days of the summer transfer window, though only if finding a buyer for Joshua Zirkzee first.
An experienced back-up for Benjamin Sesko is wanted, with Matheus Cunha proving in the Hull humbling at the weekend he’s not the answer in the No 9 position.
Another frontman on Man Utd’s books is 20-year-old Ethan Wheatley, though he’s about to depart on loan.
At the beginning of August, transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano, brought surprising news of Everton giving strong consideration to making a move for Wheatley.
Romano wrote on X: ‘EXCL: Everton are interested in Man United talented striker Ethan Wheatley.
‘#EFC preparing a proposal to make formal approach with Man United soon for the 20 year old forward.’
Everton’s interest was surprising because Wheatley is not yet ready for Premier League level, as evidenced by his less-than-stellar goals return during loans at lower league clubs.
During loan spells with Walsall (League Two), Northampton Town and Bradford City (both League One), Wheatley scored just three goals in 40 appearances combined.
During his most recent loan spell with Bradford, Wheatley didn’t find the net once in 11 outings.
In any case, Everton’s shock interest in the striker has come to nothing, with journalist Pete O’Rourke revealing Wheatley is now being loaned to Championship side, Lincoln City.
Man Utd agree Lincoln loan for Ethan Wheatley
‘Understand Manchester United forward Ethan Wheatley has agreed a move to Lincoln City,’ stated O’Rourke on X.
‘A number of clubs were chasing Wheatley, but Lincoln have won for striker’s signature.’
Backing up O’Rourke’s claims and confirming it’s a loan and not permanent switch for Wheatley, Ben Jacobs wrote on X: ‘Ethan Wheatley set to join Lincoln City on a season-long loan, as @SportsPeteO called.
‘Agreement in place between Lincoln and Manchester United.’

Wheatley is contracted to Man Utd until the summer of 2028, and the Red Devils hold an option for an extra season.
As such, Man Utd will have a fresh decision to make on the player who’ll be 21 upon returning next summer.
