City executives have formally signalled their intent by contacting Liverpool about the 27-year-old Dutch international.
Attacking reinforcements are a priority at the Etihad as City prepare for the departures of Savinho and Omar Marmoush. Gakpo is seen as a proven elite-level forward who can operate across the front line.
Gakpo remains highly regarded at Anfield after a strong start to the new campaign, underlined by his goalscoring display in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle United.
However, with Liverpool working on high-profile incoming transfers, including ongoing talks with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola and Brighton & Hove Albion for Yankuba Minteh, the prospect of Gakpo’s departure has rapidly gathered pace.
Until now, Tottenham Hotspur had been leading the chase for the former PSV star.
