Liverpool twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United, with goals from Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai’s 99th-minute penalty rescuing a point at St James’ Park.
Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest endured a disappointing start under new manager Oliver Glasner, losing 1-0 at home to Leeds United after Anton Stach scored a late direct free-kick.

Andoni Iraola has arrived at Anfield from Bournemouth to replace Arne Slot, who was sacked after Liverpool finished fifth in an underwhelming 2025-26 campaign. Iraola guided Bournemouth into Europe last season despite losing key defenders and talisman Antoine Semenyo.
The Spanish tactician is known for his aggressive, front-foot style of football. Glasner, meanwhile, is Forest’s fifth head coach in less than 12 months after leaving Crystal Palace.
The Austrian has confirmed Morgan Gibbs-White will miss Forest’s Carabao Cup second-round tie against Leeds on Tuesday.
The Englishman played the full 90 minutes in Saturday’s Premier League opener against the same opposition but went down after a second-half clash.
Forest will also be without Ryan Yates and Nicolo Savona. However, Glasner admitted they are working hard to get Gibbs-White fit for Saturday’s trip to Liverpool.
“It’s still (Ryan) Yates and (Nicolò) Savona who are out. Morgan Gibbs-White will miss tomorrow’s game. He got the ball and twisted his ankle, so the MCL was a little bit overstretched and he has some pain in his knee,” Glasner said on Monday.
“There is no structural damage, but there’s no point in risking him tomorrow. We’re working really hard to get him fit for the Liverpool game on Saturday, but he can’t make tomorrow’s game.
“A lot of players look good and fresh and tomorrow is a cup competition. We want to have the same approach no matter the competition and try to win a trophy.
“We’ve had players come back late and have only had a few weeks for pre-season, so there’s no point risking them for a second competitive game in quick succession. We’ll have fresh minds and we’ll try to win the game.”
