Chelsea have already had three successive bids, £62 million, £64 million, £68 million, rejected without hesitation. Bournemouth aren’t bluffing. Backed by European football this season and Scott contracted until 2028, they face zero financial pressure to sell anyone in the final days. To move at all, they would demand north of £80 million plus a guarantee of finding a quality replacement inside 72 hours. That’s a near-impossible ask.
Chelsea’s pursuit is entirely reactive. No Fernandez sale, no funding mechanism, no Scott. City could simply walk away from the Fernandez deal, or worse for Chelsea, go directly after Scott themselves, which Bailey’s report suggests City has already explored independently. That scenario would leave Chelsea completely stranded.
The squad situation doesn’t scream desperate need either. Caicedo, Lavia, and Morgan Rogers are already there. Scott’s 12.18 defensive actions per 90 would genuinely upgrade that midfield, but paying a heavily inflated late-window premium to do it makes little financial sense when no crisis forces the issue.
