Former first round draft pick Cam Whitmore is expected to get waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers to become a free agent. The Miami Heat may be able to strike gold by getting another player to help their perceived biggest flaw of lacking depth. A bold trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo saw Miami trading a handful of rotation players to create a hole in many positions. The franchise needs to add one or two NBA proven players for real hopes of title contention.

Whitmore was recently linked to Miami as the top option for him to have a fresh start and contribute to winning basketball. The Houston Rockets drafted Whitmore with the 20th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, but they quickly lost faith in his potential. Other young talents like Amen Thompson, Tari Eason, and Reed Sheppard became the real important pieces for the future.

The Washington Wizards traded for Whitmore last summer, but he failed to prove his worth in the NBA to keep him on the roster. Cleveland recently acquired Whitmore as part of a five-team trade to land Peyton Watson. However, they are fully expected to cut Whitmore since he doesn’t fit into the rotation. Miami and other teams could take the chance on a 22-year-old improving in a new situation.

How Cam Whitmore Would Fit Into Miami Heat Rotation

The Heat only had six trustworthy role players a week ago to show their biggest issue entering the season. Signing Klay Thompson turned out to be a huge move since they needed a three-point shooter and he fits into the roster perfectly.

Names like Giannis, Klay, Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, and Davion Mitchell will likely be the starters. Whitmore would have no chance of starting either way, so his best bet would be to become a serviceable bench player for the overall depth.

Bobby Portis and Tim Hardaway are considered the trusted bench veterans. Whitmore would compete with Nikola Jovic for forward minutes. The age of Whitmore is a huge help too since the team is full of veterans. Athleticism and youth could help make Whitmore a more valued part of the roster.

Other Teams That Could Sign Cam Whitmore

Multiple teams would be interested in giving Whitmore a chance at a new start since he’ll likely be a cheap price. The Brooklyn Nets and Charlotte Hornets were named with the Heat as the three teams who make the most sense.

Young teams lacking at the forward position would be foolish to not at least talk to Whitmore about his future. The Golden State Warriors are one high-profile team who badly needs talent after failing to do anything this offseason. Whitmore could be a good fit here since the team lacks a clear starting small forward.

Many other teams will likely try to get involved too, but Miami offers the chance to contend if he plays well enough to stay on the team. The Heat organization also has a history of helping struggling players break out by getting the most out of talent, like with Max Strus, Duncan Robinson, and others in the recent past.
