Aside from the surprise trade for Ja Morant, it's been a relatively quiet offseason for the Portland Trail Blazers. That is, until young wing Shaedon Sharpe reportedly tore his meniscus on Monday, virtually keeping him out of action for at least six months.
It's devastating news for a rising star who has improved every year since the Blazers selected him seventh overall in 2022. With every injury, though, comes opportunity, and the vacated minutes might land with another youngster Portland fans know all too well. If he's not careful, it may be his last chance.
Guard Scoot Henderson has been nothing short of disappointing since getting drafted third overall three years ago. He has failed to shoot better than 42.0 percent in a season, and his minutes have dwindled every year. His potential "bust" status culminated last year when he played in just 30 games, while coming off the bench in 20 of them.

While Henderson has done little to warrant an extended role in Portland, he will now be given one last chance to prove he is capable of playing winning basketball. Sharpe's injury vacates nearly 30.0 minutes per night at the guard position. Though Sharpe plays more of an off-ball role than Henderson is familiar with, it might be a prime opportunity for the latter to develop with lesser expectations. An off-ball role may actually be more suitable for a player who has never averaged less than 2.4 turnovers per game.
Especially given that Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday are expected to run the offense, Scoot may actually be better suited for a role that requires him to man the wings on the perimeter.
With Scoot's contract up after the 2026-27 season, he will have one more shot to prove he was worth his third-overall draft status. It's a lofty goal, and he likely won't reach it, but the Blazers will surely be content if they recoup any of their losses at this point.
Sharpe's injury is nothing short of a travesty. The 23-year-old appeared ready to take yet another step in his development, especially with a bolstered roster surrounding him. Now, the Trail Blazers will be forced to move on without him, at least for the majority of the regular season. By the time he returns, Scoot Henderson will have either proven his worth or solidified himself as one of the team's biggest draft-day busts.
