The completion of the North Hollywood Central and North Hollywood West Groundwater Treatment Facilities was celebrated today, as city leaders say they will help supply drinking water locally to communities across the city, reducing dependence on imported water.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power San Fernando Valley Groundwater Remediation Program includes a third facility in Tujunga, scheduled for completion by 2027. The facilities are one of the city's largest investments in local water infrastructure.
"These state-of-the-art facilities will help restore up to 43 million gallons of contaminated groundwater daily to supply hundreds of thousands of homes with reliable drinking water – all while reducing our dependence on imported water and launching us forward to meet our bold climate goals," Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said. Her Climate Action Plan sets a goal of reaching a 70% local water supply by 2035.

Using advanced treatment technology, the new facilities will pump, treat, and remove contaminants from groundwater to meet drinking water standards. The treated water will then enter LADWP's water distribution system.
"Right now, we're importing more than 70 percent of our water," said Councilmember Adrin Nazarian, "We're going to turn that around and produce 70% of our water locally."
Collectively, these facilities will have the capacity to extract and treat roughly 92 million gallons of water per day, enough to supply up to 400,000 Los Angeles homes a year.
