Atletico Madrid and Argentina star Julian Alvarez is at the centre of the biggest transfer saga of this transfer window, with no end in sight ahead of the approaching September 1 deadline.
The World Cup winner has made no secret of the fact he wants to leave Atleti to join LaLiga rivals Barcelona, but the club do not want to let him go – and the story has played out publicly.
Meanwhile, new reports suggest Premier League champions Arsenal are circling, ready to pounce on the stalemate between the parties.
As we enter the final week of the transfer window, football360.com.au explains the situation and everything you need to know.

What is happening with Julian Alvarez?
Put simply, Alvarez wants to leave Atletico Madrid.
Speaking after Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria at the World Cup on June 22, Alvarez told ESPN: “I don’t think this is the time to talk about this, but I can’t hide either. I try to be an honest person. I’ve spoken with the people at the club, with those I needed to speak to.
“I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream.”
That dream is joining Barcelona, who are also keen to sign the forward.
However, Atletico have made it very clear that they have no interest in selling the 26-year-old, who is under contract until the end of the 2029-30 season.
In late May, there was an extraordinary series of tweets from the club, trolling Barcelona over their approach for Alvarez.
“In a few minutes, we will publish a statement about a relevant matter that is generating numerous pieces of disinformation,” they posted.
Then, they posted fake ‘offers’ for Barca stars Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha, before writing: “Finally, we want to take this opportunity to categorically deny that we have made an offer to the sporting director of FC Barcelona to join our scouting team in the Brazilian market.”
And adding, “No, Atlético de Madrid would never do something like that. However, in recent months, we’ve been suffering a smear campaign against one of our players. Leaked information with ulterior motives, ‘fake news,’ constant disrespect, the culé version of the propaganda machine inventing little stories, calls before direct matchups… But of course, it wouldn’t occur to us either to have the referees’ vice president on our payroll or to resort to political favors to register players. RESPECT and VALUES.”

Meanwhile, local rivals Real Madrid announced they had seen a €150 million (A$245m) offer turned down for the forward.
“We announce that, following the meeting of the board of directors held [Tuesday], the club made an offer of €150m to Atlético Madrid for the federative rights of Álvarez,” Real Madrid said in a statement.
“After reviewing and evaluating the offer, Atlético expressed gratitude for the proposal, made within the framework of the good relations between both clubs, and rejected it, referring to the player’s release clause.”
Arsenal has recently emerged as a possible alternative destination for Alvarez as the Argentine was booed by the club’s fans during their 2-2 draw against Villarreal in LaLiga.
He then did not engage with the fans after the match as Diego Simeone revealed: “The club decided he should not go near the stands or the fans… “It was the club’s decision to keep him away and separate him, so he could go to the locker room.”
All eyes are now on whether he will in fact leave the club before the window closes.
Why does Alvarez want to leave Atletico Madrid?
His primary motivation appears to his keenness to join reigning LaLiga champions Barcelona, although he has not outright stated the clear reason why he wants to depart.
Alvarez has played 107 matches for Atleti, contributing 49 goals and 17 assists since arriving from Manchester City in 2024.
Whispers about him wanting to leave the club have been emerging since as early as March 2026 – and reports suggest there has been a belief from the player that he would be allowed to leave should a sizeable offer come in.
Instead, Atletico have held firm on their position that they do not want to sell Alvarez.
This week, the club’s CEO Gil marin told EFE that he feels the player has been badly advised.
“Atlético Madrid, like every big club, is built on great players, and Julián is one of them, as well as being a great professional,” Gil Marín told the news agency EFE on Friday.
“We have to compete with our values, with homegrown players and the best players we can bring in from outside.
“We are going to help Julián and continue to look after him, so he can reach his full potential… We must understand that Julián hasn’t had the best advisors around him in recent months.”
He added: “We can’t allow other clubs and their related media to decide what we have to do, to determine our sporting strategy and to show us a lack of respect.”

Alvarez’s agent Fernando Hidalgo appeared to respond on Instagram soon after when he posted: “Never ask a liar why he lied, because to explain why, he’d have to lie again.”
Speaking at a press conference Simeone added: “There’s no uncertainty. Miguel Ángel [Gil Marín] spoke clearly. For me (Alvarez is) a really important player to achieve our objectives. We’ll be with him, we’ll look after him on the sporting side, because he’s our player… He’ll be in the squad tomorrow.”
How much would Julián Álvarez cost? Could he join Arsenal?
Alvarez has a release clause in his contract that stands at a mammoth €500 million (A$815m).
However, The Athletic report that Atletico Madrid would consider offers of €150m (A$245m) for the World Cup winner.
Mario Cortegana reported that a source close to Atletico’s leadership suggests that ‘the only way they saw Alvarez leading this summer would be if Arsenal made a €150m offer’, with the club not willing to strengthen their league rivals.
According to Diario Sport, the Gunners are preparing to offer a deal including Viktor Gyokeres and €80m (A$130m), with the player said to be open to heading back to England.
Meanwhile, BBC report that Arsenal view Alvarez as their ‘dream transfer target’ and have been waiting for the right moment to strike in this transfer window.
That report suggests Alvarez truly wants a move to Barcelona, but Atleti are adamant they will not sell to the Camp Nou club, while the player is ‘aware of certain visa regulations that would create difficult for his family visiting him in the UK’,
The ball is reportedly in the Argentine’s court, with the Gunners said to be confident they can finance a deal quickly if he gives the green light.
Why was Julián Álvarez booed by Atlético Madrid fans?
In short, this entire saga.
Fans are not happy about Alvarez publicly pushing to leave the club and particularly to join direct rival Barcelona.
He was booed while warming up and then again when he came on against Villarreal at the Wanda Metropolitano on August 23.
A section of the crowd reportedly chanted: “Let him leave once and for all, let him leave…”

While his teammates saluted the fans after the 2-2 draw, Alvarez headed straight into the changerooms, which Simeone revealed was a decision made by the club.
Asked about his advice for the forward, the Atleti boss said: “I have to focus on my job, which is to give my best for Atletico Madrid. If we want to win a title, we need to stick together, have forwards, and have key forwards. We all need to work accordingly on what we need.”
Will Julián Álvarez leave Atlético Madrid?
That’s the golden question ahead of the September 1 closing of the transfer window.
If he does leave, it seems likely the only possible destination will be Arsenal, who are in position to make their move in the final days of the window.
Barcelona want Alvarez and he wants them, but Atletico look set to stand firm on their unwillingness to sell him to a LaLiga rival.
