Newcastle United have “entered negotiations” to sign Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo, according to reports in the French media.
L’Equipe claim that the Magpies have submitted a bid worth €40m (£34m) “excluding bonuses” for the Belgian international.
Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are also keen on signing Fernandez-Pardo, but is felt that the “great financial power” of the Premier League club could convince Lille to sell.
The 21-year-old has been pushing to leave the Ligue One side all summer, but club president Olivier Letang has steadfastly maintained his position that the player is going nowhere.

Both Liverpool and Manchester United have been credited with an interest in the winger over the past couple of months.
However, the former have devoted most of their efforts to recruiting Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, while the latter have had to cool their pursuit after failing to offload Marcus Rashford.

Newcastle United are looking to strengthen their squad further
Sporting director Ross Wilson has recruited six senior players so far this summer, including Bazoumana Toure, Amar Dedic, Aladji Bamba, Lukas Hornicek, Sean Steur and Ewem Jaouen.
However, speaking at the weekend, manager Matthias Jaissle confirmed that further additions were likely:
“For sure, there will be adjustments made, the needs are clear. The management knows about the needs and we are all aligned. We will use the remaining time [in the transfer window] in the best possible way, but also we trust the players who are already here.”
