The Miami Heat may not be finished reshaping their roster after adding Klay Thompson.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Thompson's signing leaves Miami with 13 standard NBA contracts, meaning the organization must now decide whether to enter the 2026-27 regular season with 14 or the maximum 15 players.
Nick Richards remains a prime candidate if Miami decides to add another center, while former Heat players Gabe Vincent and Keshad Johnson have also been under consideration.
"Out of all those remaining unsigned this late into the summer, Nick Richards has the best chance to earn some type of contract with Miami, whether it's a standard deal, partially/non-guaranteed deal, or a training camp deal," Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported.
The decision comes after Thompson gave up nearly $10 million of the $17.5 million he was scheduled to earn from Dallas this season to facilitate a buyout following more than six weeks of discussions with the Mavericks, per Stein.
Nick Richards remains prime candidate for Heat
Richards appears to be the most natural fit if Miami prioritizes frontcourt depth.
The 6-foot-11 center spent the 2025-26 season between the Phoenix Suns and Chicago Bulls, appearing in 48 games and averaging 5.8 points and 5.1 rebounds while shooting 51.2% from the field.
For his career, Richards has averaged 7.1 points and 5.8 rebounds in 305 games while converting 62.1% of his field-goal attempts.
Richards played three seasons at Kentucky before entering the NBA as the No. 42 overall pick in the 2020 draft.
He began his NBA career with Charlotte and spent more than four seasons with the Hornets before being traded to Phoenix in January 2025. The Suns acquired Richards and a second-round pick for Josh Okogie and three second-round selections.
Phoenix then sent him to Chicago in February 2026 as part of a three-team trade involving the Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks.
Richards would give Miami a traditional interior presence and another rebounding option off the bench.

Gabe Vincent could return to Miami
Another possibility would involve a familiar face.
Vincent developed into an established NBA player during four seasons with Miami and played an important role in the Heat's run to the 2023 NBA Finals.
The undrafted UC Santa Barbara product originally broke into the league with Miami in 2020, gradually developing from a two-way player into a regular member of Erik Spoelstra's rotation.
His success ultimately earned him a three-year contract with the Lakers in 2023, although injuries disrupted much of his time in Los Angeles.
The Lakers traded Vincent and a 2032 second-round pick to Atlanta for Luke Kennard at the 2026 trade deadline.
Vincent appeared in 53 games between the Lakers and Hawks last season, averaging 4.4 points, 1.4 assists and 1.0 rebound while shooting 34.1% from three-point range.
He has career averages of 6.7 points, 1.9 assists and 1.5 rebounds across 331 games.
Keshad Johnson another familiar option
Johnson would represent a considerably younger option.
The 25-year-old went undrafted in 2024 after spending four seasons at San Diego State and his final college campaign at Arizona. He helped San Diego State reach the 2023 NCAA championship game before averaging 11.5 points and 5.9 rebounds at Arizona.
Miami signed Johnson to a two-way contract following the draft before converting him to a standard NBA deal in December 2024.
He received a larger opportunity during the 2025-26 campaign, appearing in 32 games and averaging 4.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.3 assists in limited minutes while shooting 49.0% from the field.
Johnson also gained national attention during All-Star Weekend by winning the 2026 Slam Dunk Contest, defeating Spurs rookie Carter Bryant in the final.
Miami elected not to extend Johnson a qualifying offer this summer, allowing him to enter unrestricted free agency, but the latest Stein's report suggests a reunion remains under consideration.
