Anthony Gordon registered two assists from the bench in his competitive debut for Barcelona.
Anthony Gordon has vowed to play as a striker for Barcelona if called upon at his new club.
An impressive debut saw the former Newcastle United man come off the bench and grab two assists in a 5-0 win over Elche. Gordon finally made his La Liga bow and is aiming for big trophies after leaving the Magpies.
Toon chiefs acted quickly to sanction his exit following the end of last season. Barca stumped up £70million - which could rise further - and Gordon’s exit triggered an exodus on Tyneside.
Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Eddie Howe followed suit, with Matthias Jaissle now leading the St James’ Park rebuild. As for Gordon, he referenced playing as a striker for Newcastle in 2025-26, promising to fill the void if needed as Barcelona chase a big-money addition.
‘I played there’ - Anthony Gordon
"Yeah of course, I played there last year a lot,” he said post-match. “I played really well I thought. I have got different strengths to a typical No.9. I can come and go and link play. I can do it. I like to play there."
Anthony Gordon on Barcelona welcome
Gordon also thanked the Barca fans for their welcome since ditching Tyneside for Catalonia. He added: "I feel so good since I've arrived. I said in the interview then that the guys have made me feel so welcome.
“I feel at home already. The city is amazing. The people are so friendly and I think I would get better and better the longer I'm here."
