Several reliable outlets confirmed that the club had reached an agreement with both Manchester City and Nico Gonzalez’s camp over a summer move. We await official confirmation now. But it does look as good as done.
This has to be considered a major coup for Newcastle United. The club have struggled to convince players all summer, but are now on the verge of signing a 24-year-old from Manchester City in a £50 million deal.
That is not the end of it either. It looks like Newcastle United are interested in reuniting Gonzalez with one of his former teammates at Barcelona. And the player might be eyeing the Camp Nou exit door as well.

Aston Villa, Brighton and Sunderland have done the same. But it is Nottingham Forest who are thought to be leading the race right now.
Of course, Casado is another player who has come through the famous La Masia ranks. And he was briefly teammates with Gonzalez in the senior team as well, before the latter parted ways.
Now, Casado could be looking to do the same, having failed to establish himself as a starter at Barcelona under Hansi Flick so far. With the club now signing Rodri, those opportunities are expected to dry up further.
He would get chances a lot more consistently at a club like Newcastle United or Nottingham Forest. Let’s see if a move away from Camp Nou ends up materialising or not.
It is easy to see why Newcastle United might look to build a midfield around La Masia graduates, Gonzalez and Casado. Barcelona have a history of producing the best midfielders in the world.
It would be another coup if Newcastle United are able to sign Casado as well. While he is not a starter for Barcelona, the talent has never been in doubt.
Clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City have been linked with him as well. And it was suggested that Man Utd made contact earlier in the summer, but are now out of the race having signed three other midfielders.
Things are finally starting to look up for Newcastle United, who had seemed headed for a relegation battle for a little while. Let’s hope they can finish the summer transfer window strong and get some momentum on their side.
