Arsenal winger Christos Tzolis names dream Champions League opponent

Arsenal winger Christos Tzolis has revealed he wants to face former club Club Brugge in the Champions League after receiving a warm welcome during a return to Belgium.

The Greece international joined Arsenal from Brugge in a £34million deal this summer and has quickly established himself in Mikel Arteta’s attack.

However, Tzolis has maintained a close connection with his former club and attended Sunday’s derby against Cercle Brugge.

He now hopes Thursday’s Champions League draw presents an opportunity to return with Arsenal.

Christos Tzolis returns to Club Brugge

Tzolis received a standing ovation during his appearance at the Jan Breydel Stadium, where he performed the ceremonial kick-off before Brugge’s derby.

Club Brugge had announced that Tzolis would take part in the event, underlining the relationship he still enjoys with supporters.

His popularity reflects an impressive two-year spell in Belgium.

Reuters reported that Tzolis scored 43 goals and provided 45 assists across 108 appearances for Club Brugge.

He has made a similarly encouraging start at Arsenal, producing two assists against Manchester City in the Community Shield.

Tzolis also impressed during Arsenal’s opening Premier League fixture, with ReadArsenal highlighting his performance in the 3-0 victory over Coventry.

Arsenal could face Club Brugge in Champions League

Tzolis’ preferred reunion remains a genuine possibility because Arsenal and Club Brugge are in different Champions League seeding pots.

Arsenal are in Pot 1, while Brugge are among the clubs in Pot 2.

Each team will face two opponents from each pot, meaning Arteta’s side could meet the Belgian champions either home or away.

UEFA has confirmed the league-phase draw takes place on Thursday, 27 August, at 5pm BST.

Tzolis’ growing importance also arrives as Arsenal consider further changes to their attack.

Gabriel Martinelli is moving closer to a potential transfer to Al Hilal, potentially increasing the Greek winger’s role during the coming season.
