Derby County will bank a small fee from Omari Kelleyman's move to Strasbourg as part of the FIFA solidarity payment scheme. Kellyman sealed his move to the French Ligue One club today, ending his time at Chelsea, who spent £19m to sign him from Aston Villa in 2024.
The fee has remained undisclosed, but it has been claimed that the deal is worth between £5m and £8.5m for Kellyman, who made no appearances for the Blues and spent last season on loan at Cardiff City, where he helped them win promotion to the Championship.
But Derby will benefit from the deal as part of FIFA's pledge to reward clubs when a player they helped develop moves abroad. The buying club takes five per cent of the fee and sets it aside, which, if the fee is £5m, is £250,000.
Rather than go to the selling club, it goes into a special "solidarity" fund and five per cent is divided and sent to every club that trained the player between their 12th and 23rd birthdays. As Kellyman was at Derby between the ages of 12-15, if the move is worth £5m, Derby will pocket between £62,500 and £75,000. FIFA awards a flat 0.25% of the total transfer fee for each full season. Derby will receive a one per cent total for these four years, which equals exactly £50,000.
When he turned 16, the FIFA reward rate doubled to 0.50 per cent of the transfer fee (up to £25,000). With Kellyman moving to Aston Villa in mid-season in March 2022, Derby will collect a pro-rata cut estimated between £12,500 and £25,000 based on the exact number of registration days.
Aston Villa will bank around £12,500 to £25,000 for their part in his development, while the rest of the solidarity payment pot will be split between Strasbourg and Chelsea.
