Stamford Bridge officials must offload four senior players before September 1 or risk watching players tear up their contracts and walk away on free transfers under a new legal framework.

Premier League registration limits, FIFA loan caps and strict new player protection laws pose a significant problem for the Blues, if it cannot be rectified in time.
Chelsea's squad registration bottleneck

Chelsea’s bloated first-team squad currently stands at 39 players. While 10 of those qualify as Under-21 players, meaning they do not occupy a spot on the Premier League's 25-man squad list but remain eligible to feature, the reality for the rest of the squad is stark.
Because Premier League rules cap senior squads at 25, four established over-21 players will be left unregistered if they remain on Chelsea's books after the window shuts.

Loan loophole closed
In previous years, Chelsea might have bypassed registration headaches by farming surplus players out on loan, particularly to French side Strasbourg under the shared BlueCo ownership umbrella.
However, updated FIFA regulations have restricted that particular route.
FIFA limits clubs to a maximum of six international loans per season, with a secondary rule stipulating that no more than three players can be loaned to the same club.
Chelsea have already burnt through two of their six outgoing international loan slots, including one to Strasbourg. Consequently, Chelsea possess four remaining outgoing loan spots in total and can send a maximum of two more players to Strasbourg.
The consequences of leaving players unregistered are far more dangerous than the dressing-room discontent of previous seasons. A new agreement between FIFA and global players' union FIFPRO now gives exiled players housed within a club's "bomb squad" the power to take legal action.

If a player is excluded from the official squad list or banished to train separately from the first-team, they now hold the legal right to cite "just sporting cause."
If Chelsea are deemed in breach of these employment standards, the affected player can theoretically terminate their contract with immediate effect.
For Chelsea, contract terminations would mean forfeiting hundreds of millions of pounds in amortised transfer value and potential resale fees. In theory, players signed for massive sums could walk away for nothing.
With the transfer deadline falling next Tuesday, September 1, Chelsea have less than a week to broker the requisite departures.
