Newcastle United may be about to complete a deal for Man City star Nico Gonzalez, but they shouldn't stop there if they want to give Matthias Jaissle a real chance of being competitive this season.

The Magpies have seen Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, and Bruno Guimaraes sold for a combined £250m in this transfer window, while Jaissle inherited a squad that had seen young stars such as Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba, Seun Steur, and Ewen Jaouen added under Eddie Howe.

But the German is now looking to bring in some experience to strengthen the side, and midfield is a key area of the team that needs reinforcements before the transfer window closes on September 1st.

It has been reported that a £50m deal for Gonzalez to move to St James' Park has been agreed, and the Spaniard is expected to be Jaissle's second signing since taking over, following the arrival of Amar Dedic from Benfica.

But it's clear that Newcastle need more than just Gonzalez in midfield so that they can truly be competitive once more this season, despite the impressive performances of Lewis Miley and Steur in the opening game of the season against Liverpool.

The club have been linked with a number of players this summer in that position, and that includes the Germany international Angelo Stiller. While a move hasn't advanced at this stage, it's undoubtedly one they should be taking a closer look at in the final days of the window.

Angel Stiller Bruno Guimaraes comparison

Newcastle made contact over a deal for Stiller earlier in the window, with the Stuttgart star having a release clause in his contract worth just £35m. His playing style has seen him compared to Germany and Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos, while his skillset is not that disimilar to that of former captain Guimaraes.

It could be the perfect signing for Jaissle to add quality, experience, and a familiar profile to the squad, with a deal seemingly not that difficult to pull off either.

Newcastle Need Reinforcements

Stiller is considered to be one of the top young midfield prospects in Europe, and Newcastle have regularly looked at the Bundesliga for top talents who can come in and explode at St James' Park.

Their best deals in recent years have been ones that follow that path, and Stiller would be another that would have limited risk attached to it. He has the experience of playing at the top level, has the skillset that can succeed in the Premier League, and has the quality to make an immediate impact.

Scout Ben Mattinson has previously talked up his 'exceptional' passing ability, and that would see him fit in perfectly with what Jaissle is looking to build.

Newcastle know that they need reinforcements before the transfer window closes if they want to seriously compete for a European spot this season, and Stiller could be the best bit of business they can do.
