Shakhtar Donetsk have found a new home for their Champions League campaign. The Ukrainian champions will play their European home games at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge this season. It is a move shaped by war and the need to keep playing.
Stamford Bridge to host Shakhtar Donetsk

The stadium became the preferred choice because of its size, location and links with the Ukrainian community in the city. That plan is now agreed. The 40,044-seat west London ground will host at least four home games in the league phase. Shakhtar qualified after winning the Ukrainian Premier League last season. The opponents will be known after the Champions League draw.
The choice also works well for Chelsea. The Blues finished 10th in the Premier League last season and will not play in Europe this year. That means there is no clash between their own fixtures and the Ukrainian side’s games. For Shakhtar, this gives the club one fixed base for its European campaign instead of moving between countries.
Why Shakhtar Donetsk cannot play at home
Shakhtar have not played at their Donbas Arena in Donetsk since 2014. The conflict in the Donbas region forced the club to leave its home. Since then, the team has had to build a football life away from its own city. The club has played European matches in Poland, Germany and Slovenia in recent years. Domestic games have also been held in Ukraine, including in Kyiv and Lviv. The situation means the club still cannot safely host major European games at home.
The move to London gives Shakhtar a stable place for the new Champions League season. It also offers access to a large Ukrainian community in the capital. That could help make the matches feel closer to home for fans living in Britain. The club says Ukraine remains its true home. It hopes European football can return to Donetsk. The clubs have also been involved in the Game4Ukraine charity event. The Ukrainian side had also reportedly considered other London grounds, but Stamford Bridge offered a larger capacity and a strong location.
