That opening-day scoreline offered a snapshot of a squad still finding its shape under a new head coach.
Cody Gakpo’s equaliser and a late intervention from substitute Victor Munoz, who won the decisive penalty, hinted at strength in depth. But question marks remain over which of Liverpool’s fringe players will still be on Merseyside come September 1.
The club’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has dominated the summer narrative. Attention has also turned to the future of Cody Gakpo who has been linked with a move away before the deadline, while Curtis Jones has already joined Inter Milan.
Behind the headline pursuits, though, another story has been building among Liverpool’s younger professionals.
Decisions on their futures could shape the composition of Iraola’s squad heading into the campaign, even if the departures involved carry a lower profile than any incoming deal.
According to The Athletic’s Transfer DealSheet, Liverpool are likely to sanction a number of loan exits in the coming week. Kaide Gordon, Wellity Lucky, Jayden Danns and Keyrol Figueroa are among the players whose situations are under consideration.
Luke Chambers and James McConnell are attracting strong interest from Championship clubs, the report adds. No final decision has been made on whether either player will be loaned out or kept within the senior setup until the January window.
Lewis Koumas’ situation looks different. The 20-year-old was rewarded for his pre-season form with a Premier League debut against Newcastle, coming off the bench in the 78th minute of the draw at St James’ Park.
It was his first appearance for Liverpool since scoring on his debut against Southampton in the FA Cup in February 2024.
Koumas spent the following period out on loan, first at Stoke City, then at Birmingham City and Hull City, accumulating close to 100 Championship appearances across those spells.
