Chelsea’s front three needed just 49 minutes at Fulham to show why Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and João Pedro could become the defining partnership of Xabi Alonso’s first season.
All three scored during Monday’s 3-2 victory at Craven Cottage, but their individual goals told only part of the story.
Their movement, combinations and willingness to exchange positions gave Chelsea an attacking dimension that Fulham struggled to contain.

Chelsea front three deliver immediate attacking results
Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 system positioned Palmer and Rogers behind João Pedro, creating two creative players capable of drifting into spaces around the Brazilian.
Alonso had explained his plan for Palmer and Rogers before kick-off, but the speed with which the partnership worked in competitive action was striking.
Palmer needed only 31 seconds to release João Pedro for Chelsea’s opening goal. The Brazilian returned the favour shortly after half-time, setting up Palmer after Rogers had helped start the move.
Between those moments, Rogers marked his Chelsea debut with a goal after Maxence Lacroix advanced from defence and delivered across the penalty area.
Chelsea finished with 18 attempts despite seeing considerably less possession than Fulham, according to FotMob’s match statistics.
The emphasis was not on dominating the ball. It was on ensuring Chelsea’s most dangerous players could attack quickly once possession changed hands.

Opta recorded five successful dribbles, five shots, three chances created, seven ball recoveries and 10 duels won.
Only one other player since the 2006-07 season has recorded all those numbers in the same Premier League match.
Those defensive contributions were particularly significant. Alonso wants his forwards to create chances without leaving the rest of the team exposed, and Palmer’s work without the ball showed an encouraging willingness to meet that demand.

Morgan Rogers and João Pedro complete Alonso’s plan
Rogers gives Chelsea another ball-carrier capable of receiving possession between the lines, while João Pedro offers the movement and combination play to connect both attacking midfielders.
That flexibility prevents defenders from concentrating entirely on Palmer, who spent much of last season carrying Chelsea’s creative responsibility.
Chelsea still have defensive issues to resolve after conceding twice at Craven Cottage.
However, the early understanding between Palmer, Rogers and João Pedro suggests Alonso may already have found the attacking combination around which his strongest performances will be built.
