Ezri Konsa could make his Arsenal debut against Aston Villa just 10 days after leaving, presenting Mikel Arteta with an immediate decision over whether to change a defence that started the season with a clean sheet.
Arsenal completed the England defender’s signing on the same day they opened their Premier League campaign against Coventry City. However, Konsa was not registered in time to feature, making Monday’s visit to Villa Park his first opportunity to represent his new club.
The reunion carries obvious emotional significance. For Arteta, however, the more pressing question is whether his £55million signing should immediately replace Cristhian Mosquera alongside Gabriel Magalhaes.

Ezri Konsa could make Arsenal debut against Aston Villa
Konsa made 286 appearances for Villa after arriving from Brentford in 2019 and helped Unai Emery’s side win the Europa League last season.
He knows the stadium, the supporters and several of the players he could face on Monday. That familiarity gives Arsenal an unusual advantage, although Villa’s summer departures mean the team awaiting him is already changing considerably.
Sky Sports reports Arsenal agreed a £51million guaranteed fee, with another £4million available in add-ons. Konsa signed a four-year contract with the option of a further season.
The timing means there is little opportunity for a gentle introduction. Arsenal’s first away fixture arrives against the club he represented for seven years, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm BST on 31 August.
Arteta must decide whether that familiarity outweighs Konsa’s limited preparation time with his new teammates.
William Saliba absence creates immediate selection question
Arsenal began their title defence with Ben White at right-back, Mosquera alongside Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori on the left.
ReadArsenal’s Coventry player ratings highlighted Mosquera’s composed performance alongside Gabriel, while White supplied the assist for Martin Odegaard’s second-half goal.
That creates a genuine choice. Mosquera has done little to justify losing his place, but Arsenal did not commit up to £55million to Konsa simply to leave him waiting indefinitely.
William Saliba remains sidelined with a back problem, while Jurrien Timber continues his recovery from a persistent groin issue. The latest Arsenal injury assessment indicates Saliba could miss several months, with Timber still weeks away.
Konsa can cover both right-sided defensive positions, offering Arteta the option of replacing Mosquera centrally or managing White’s workload at full-back.
The simplest route would be pairing Konsa with Gabriel, although changing a defensive partnership after a comfortable opening victory carries its own risk.
Aston Villa uncertainty complicates Arsenal preparations
Villa’s circumstances have shifted considerably since Konsa’s departure. Emery’s side lost 4-0 at Brighton, with midfielder João Gomes subsequently ruled out of the Arsenal fixture through suspension.
There is also renewed uncertainty surrounding Ollie Watkins. The striker has reportedly returned to training and apologised to teammates, although his availability remains unclear while Al Hilal continue pursuing a transfer.
Meanwhile, talkSPORT reports Villa have submitted an opening offer for Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, underlining the uncertainty around Emery’s attacking options.
Konsa’s knowledge of Villa could still prove valuable, particularly if Watkins plays. Yet Arsenal cannot assume the side he left will closely resemble the one waiting at Villa Park.
For Arteta, the decision is straightforward enough: preserve the defence that kept Coventry quiet or immediately trust the experienced defender Arsenal recruited to handle precisely this situation.
