We’ve spent most of the offseason talking about Jalen Duren’s future with the Detroit Pistons, and to a lesser extent, that of Ausar Thompson.
Neither are signed to long-term deals yet, but they will likely get them at some point, so their long-term future is not (yet) in doubt.
That can’t be said of most of the rest of the roster, as the Pistons have 10 players on some sort of expiring or non-guaranteed contract next season, which could lead to major roster churn and some tough decisions.
John Collins and Duncan Robinson on non-guaranteed contracts
Collins and Robinson are on similar deals in the $15-17 million range that are not fully guaranteed beyond this season, which practically screams “AGGREGATE ME IN A TRADE!”
That may not be easy, as these two represent 40 percent of the starting lineup and a lot of shooting, so there is no guarantee that either of them will be moved.
But those contracts are valuable and could be used for an upgrade. Even if not, Robinson and Collins are nowhere near a lock to be back after next season.
Isaiah Joe and Ron Holland are different kinds of team options
Isaiah Joe has a team option for the 2027-28 season at a reasonable rate, so it’s one the Pistons will almost certainly pick up. They don’t have to make any immediate decision on Joe, who should provide good value for money for at least two seasons.
The same can’t be said of Holland, who really is in a prove-it year for the Pistons. Holland’s team option jumps up to $11.5 million after next season, which is at the higher end of the rookie scale because he was a top five pick.
Holland has to prove he’s worth that, but the Pistons won’t have much time to decide, as they only have until the end of October to exercise their team option. Even if they pick it up, Holland could be used as trade bait at the deadline.
Pistons who will be free agents
This is a long list of six players who are on expiring contracts next season and includes Paul Reed, Daniss Jenkins, Javonte Green, Gary Harris, Taurean Prince and Tolu Smith.
Other than Jenkins, who will be a restricted free agent after next season, the rest of these players are set to become unrestricted free agents, so barring extensions, the Pistons have no long-term control over their futures.
I’d guess the Pistons will try and work out an extension with Reed for less than Stewart was getting, but the rest are big question marks. Javonte Green seems happy to play on one-year deals so he could be back, but Harris and Prince almost certainly won’t be.
Outside of Cade Cunningham, the Pistons haven’t committed long-term to anyone and could face major roster turnover after next season.
