Odell Beckham Jr. let a touchdown slip through his hands at the back of the Miami end zone on Aug. 22, the kind of throw he once caught one-handed in his sleep, and the drop came at the worst possible moment. The New York Giants have to trim their roster to 53 players by 6 p.m. Sunday, and Beckham is one of the names sitting on the wrong side of that line.
New York signed the 33-year-old to a one-year deal worth $1.3 million with $0 guaranteed, a contract that only pays out if he makes the team. Twelve years after he turned into a Giants icon, the homecoming is running straight into a roster-math problem the front office may not solve in his favor.
The receiver room has no room
New York will build its receiver group around Malik Nabers, Darnell Mooney, and Darius Slayton, then rookie Malachi Fields and Calvin Austin III, all of whom sit ahead of Beckham on the depth chart. Beckham lined up behind that group at Hard Rock Stadium, taking snaps with the backups while the projected top of the room rested.

A team that keeps five or six wideouts has maybe one spot genuinely open, and Beckham is competing with Braxton Berrios. But Berrios brings the one thing Beckham no longer offers as a bottom-of-the-roster receiver: return value on special teams. That single line on the depth chart decides most receiver cuts, and it works against a 33-year-old who is on the roster to catch passes and nothing else.
The preseason tape didn’t force the issue
Beckham caught two passes for 17 yards against the Dolphins and let a Jameis Winston throw go through his hands in the end zone in the second quarter. A week earlier, he managed two catches for six yards against Minnesota. Across two preseason games, that is four receptions for 23 yards, not the kind of tape a bubble receiver uses to take a job.

However, to his credit, Beckham did get open a few times against the Vikings. The ball just didn’t get thrown his way.

Head coach John Harbaugh has said he is not inclined to hold the drop against Beckham, and the veteran has moved well and gotten open through camp, per amNewYork. The eye test is not the problem. The depth chart is.
The contract makes the decision painless
Beckham’s deal carries no guaranteed money and no dead-cap charge. New York can release him and owe nothing, which is exactly why a sentimental keep is hard to justify over a younger receiver who plays teams. The front office structured this signing so it could walk away clean, and clean exits are the ones that happen on cutdown weekend.

Beckham was the 12th overall pick in 2014 and opened his career with three straight 1,000-yard seasons. That résumé still carries weight, but that version of Beckham is not walking into the Giants’ 2026 receiver room, and the front office is paying for what he is now, not what the number on the back of the jersey used to mean.
The homecoming may not survive the weekend
The Giants can carry Beckham as a story. What they cannot easily carry is a non-contributing 33-year-old over a receiver who plays special teams, and unless New York trades a wideout to open a spot, the reunion could end before Week 1 ever arrives.
