From Toxic Thunder to Phantom Black – Ranking Liverpool’s last 12 third kits

It is fair to say that Liverpool have had a mixed bag of third kits over the years, but which one stands out as the nicest?

Liverpool’s Premier League campaign is underway, having already worn their new home strip against Newcastle and the away kit in pre-season.

The Reds’ third kit is also soon to be unveiled – a black shirt with an abstract maroon pattern and a silver crest.

Ahead of its unveiling, we have ranked Liverpool’s last 12 third kits.

12. 2014/15

The 2014/15 season was a grim one under Brendan Rodgers, so it feels right that this kit sits at the bottom of the pile.

The black strip with its ugly red squiggle across the front is one that not many Liverpool fans will still have lying around!

11. 2020/21

Liverpool were favourites to win the Premier League in 2020/21, but a combination of coronavirus and endless serious injuries put paid to that.

Another black kit, Jurgen Klopp‘s side did at least produce a masterclass in it away to Crystal Palace, winning 7-0.

10. 2015/16

Klopp arrived as Liverpool manager in October 2015, with the Reds’ third kit yet again largely black in colour.

They’ve really had a type at times!

Philippe Coutinho‘s outrageous solo effort in the draw at Man United in the Europa League was a standout moment.

9. 2016/17

Much was made of Liverpool’s ‘Toxic Thunder’ kit in 2016/17, and the vibrant green strip made a disastrous first outing.

Klopp’s men lost 2-0 at Burnley in their opening Premier League away game, but they recovered well and qualified for the Champions League.

Liverpool also wore the kit in their final away match: a 4-0 win at West Ham that felt huge in the top-four battle.

8. 2019/20

Liverpool’s all-conquering 2019/20 campaign saw them wear a “phantom black” shirt with “embroidered club crest and New Balance logo.”

The pattern was made up of Liverpool street sign shapes, which was a nice touch, and it certainly seemed to do the trick most of the time!

7. 2017/18

The orange third kit in 2017/18 was a much bolder choice by Liverpool, as the team continued to blossom under Klopp.

Mo Salah scored a stunner in an impressive 3-0 victory away to Stoke, which was one of the Reds’ best goals of the season.

6. 2018/19

When you picture Liverpool’s third kit from 2018/19, you associate it with many wins, as they went head-to-head with Man City.

It paid homage to fan favourite kits from 1987-91, and one of the most commanding performances of the campaign was a 4-0 triumph at Bournemouth.

5. 2022/23

Liverpool fans don’t look back on 2022/23 fondly, with Klopp having a rare struggle, but at least their kits were good!

Their least-used third was dark green and not totally dissimilar to the one from 1999/00, but there weren’t many displays to remember in a hurry.

4. 2024/25

Liverpool won their second Premier League title in 2024/25, doing so in a likeable white third kit.

Salah scored a hat-trick in it when the Reds won 3-0 at Man United – for that alone, it deserves to be high on this list.

3. 2025/26

Call it recency bias, but we’re putting last season’s strip – a “sea-green colourway inspired by classic LFC and adidas designs from the 1990s and early 2000s” – in at No. 3.

Sadly, Liverpool largely performed badly in it as Arne Slot‘s era petered out in disappointing fashion.

2. 2021/22

Liverpool were on for the quadruple deep into the 2021/22 season, and there were plenty of great moments in their third kit.

The late Diogo Jota scored a ruthless brace away to Arsenal in the League Cup and looked great while celebrating.

The chequered collar reminds us of the Kop’s historic flags that have been taken on European away trips since the 1970s.

Football kits are hugely subjective, so there is every chance you won’t agree with our No. 1 pick!

We’ve gone for the strip from three seasons ago, with the purple offering and black trim an original choice by Liverpool.

It was Klopp’s final season in charge of the Reds.
