Tottenham Hotspur has invested a lot in their academy lately, and that has been the case not only in how they push to bring highly rated talents to Hotspur Way but also in how the Lilywhites look to develop and hone that talent.
And that development has led some of the biggest clubs in Europe to look to pounce on talents from N17.
There is always a slight sting that comes out as a Lilywhites faithful when you see someone from the academy going away. And that is a feeling that Spurs supporters would be having after the recent news of Leo Black joining fellow London rivals Chelsea on a free transfer.
Leo Black was out of contract at Tottenham
The teenager moved away from Tottenham after his contract at N17 expired at the end of June. And while there have been news of interests from Sheffield United as well as from Portuguese side Academico FC, it is Chelsea who have won the race to his signing. (h/t Football Insider)
There has been news that he has penned a two-year deal at the Bridge with the West Londoners looking at his arrival as a genuine coup given how highly he was rated during his time at Tottenham.
For all the Tottenham fans who had been in touch with the academy side closely, they would know exactly why Chelsea have been looking to take him to the Bridge. Black was first given a scholarship deal at Tottenham back in 2022.
And putting into context his last campaign, he went on to make twenty-seven appearances for Tottenham’s Under-21s, including minutes in the UEFA Youth League. He also gets an opportunity to don the Three Lions with the Under-19s. But despite everything he has been rated for, he never managed to get himself in the senior squad at Tottenham.
And it looks like it is exactly that lack of a pathway that has pushed his decision to look for opportunities beyond Tottenham after his deal at N17 ran out.
Chelsea filling their own academy gaps with Leo
The Blues moved quickly to sign him, given they were looking to fill gaps in their own academy. Chelsea Academy just lost Reggie Walsh and Ollie Harrison to loan spells this summer. And it looks like the developmental chiefs in West London look at Black’s profile for under 21s to justify the transfer.
Now it is to be seen if Black does eventually end up pushing his way into the senior squad at Chelsea.
