Liverpool would be looking to sign Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez if new owners were in place, according to a surprise new transfer claim.
The Reds have opted against bringing in a new midfielder so far this summer, much to the frustration of many who feel that a new face is required.
The 2-2 draw away to Newcastle United highlighted the lack of balance when Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz start together, with all three naturally attacking in style.
Trey Nyoni has emerged as a squad option, following a strong pre-season in which he was arguably Liverpool’s best player, but he is still only 19 and a work in progress.
While the general stance continues to be that the Reds won’t add to their midfield, a respected source on X has claimed that Ferdandez would be a target under new owners, amid FSG’s gradual sale of the club:
“New bid for Enzo Fernández incoming from Manchester City. Also, if the new owners were in place for Liverpool, they would be interested too.”
Would Enzo Fernandez be a good signing for Liverpool?
If Fernandez does leave Chelsea before the transfer window closes, Manchester City look like the overriding favourites to sign him, but would he be good for Liverpool?
There is no denying the World Cup winner’s quality, as shown by his goal against England in the semi-finals earlier this summer, and he was hailed by Liam Rosenior last season:
“He’s as fit as you saw against West Ham, arriving in the box in the 92nd minute. Enzo’s got a rare athleticism, it’s a gift where he can recover really quickly. The distances he covers, in terms of the data, is absolutely top, as is the quality and the leadership he gives the team.”
But Fernandez is far from the quickest, and is attack-minded, so for the money that would be required to sign him, Liverpool would be wiser to snap up more of a No.6 like Adam Wharton.
Time will tell how much longer FSG will be Liverpool’s owners, but some fans will hope that those who come in to replace them will show a little more boldness in the transfer market.
