The New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez have been in contract talks throughout the offseason. Nothing has come to fruition, despite the Week 1 opener against the Seattle Seahawks being just a few weeks away. On Tuesday, Gonzalez fielded some questions about his situation, but didn't offer too much insight.
When asked if he's optimistic a deal will be finalized before the start of the regular season, the 24-year-old cornerback claimed he is simply focusing on Week 1, according to Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald. Gonzalez did not provide any details about his contract dispute with the Patriots.
“I mean, I'm focused on Week 1 at this point,” Gonzalez said. “I mean, it's been all offseason, so like I said, I feel like the line of today is, it is what it is. So focused on Week 1 and doing what I gotta do.”

In a follow-up question from Kyed asking him if he is prepared to play in the season opener even if a contract extension is not reached, the former first-round pick continued to beat the drum that he is simply focused on preparing for the first game of the campaign.
“I'm focused on today, on this practice, and see where we go from here,” Gonzalez claimed.
After an injury derailed his rookie season, Gonzalez has bounced back as one of the league's premiere cornerbacks. The 2025-26 campaign was arguably the best of his career, despite the fact he failed to record an interception. The former Oregon Duck ended last season with 69 combined tackles (54 solo) and 10 pass deflections.
