Bristol Rovers were beaten 4-2 on penalties by Chelsea U21 in the EFL Trophy, following a 2-2 draw at The Memorial Stadium. Goals from Harrison Bettoni and Chizaram Ezenwata cancelled out strikes from Mees Rijks and Joe Quigley across a closely contested tie.
Rovers started the brighter of the two sides, going close when Reiss Russell Denny's first-time effort came back off the bar. They took the lead soon after, with Mees Rijks converting Jack Aitchison's cross. Chelsea U21 threatened in response through Harrison Bettoni and Jashayde Greenwood, but Rovers had the better of the remaining first-half chances, with Quigley twice set up inside the box.
Rovers extended their advantage after the break, Macauley Southam Hales' pace creating space down the flank before Joe Quigley doubled the lead with a clean volley from Russell Denny's delivery. Chelsea U21 responded well, pulling a goal back through Bettoni before Nicoll Jazuli's break set up Chizaram Ezenwata to level the score late on.
With the tie finishing 2-2, the outcome was decided on penalties. Jack Sparkes and Richie Smallwood were unable to convert their spot-kicks for Rovers, and Chelsea U21 held their nerve to win the shootout 4-2.
