Giants’ Wide Receiver Carted Off Practice Field
On Tuesday, the New York Giants seem to have suffered a major blow. Calvin Austin III, a wide receiver who has impressed this summer, suffered a non-contact injury during practice. Adam Schefter reported that the receiver was carted off the field with a “serious injury” (knee).
The receiver collapsed when he was preparing to run a route in a 1-on-1 drill. Several teammates swarmed Austin, and team owner John Mara even consoled him.
Earlier this offseason, Austin signed with the Giants for a one-year contract. It looked as if he would finally earn large role with the Giants after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Austin’s versatility was praised by head coach John Harbaugh just yesterday.
“So, (Austin) gives us a lot of versatility that way. Kind of everything you ask him to do, he does it well. He’s very reliable. Runs the right routes, makes catches,” Harbaugh explained. “He’s been that way kind of his whole career.”
This would be a huge loss if Austin were to miss the season, which is looking likely at this point.

Before this, the Giants’ receiver room appeared set. At the top was Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, and Austin, followed by Darnell Mooney, Malachi Fields, and Braxton Berrios.
When Odell Beckham Jr. reunited with the Giants, there was a sense that his future was uncertain. As things stand now, the veteran seems to have a good chance of replacing Austin. If there is no outside addition, Beckham, Isaiah Hodgins, and Dalen Cambre will compete for the final spot.
Austin will be hard to replace, though. The receiver is capable of playing in the slot or on the outside, which is a rare skillset. Austin also has plenty of punt return experience, which only adds to his value.
As a member of the Steelers in 2025, Austin played in 14 games and caught 31 passes for 372 yards and three touchdowns. In addition, Austin returned 14 punts and finished with 473 all-purpose yards for the Steelers.
