DETROIT, Mich. (News 10) - More than 50,000 fans filled Ford Field for the Detroit Lions’ preseason home game against the Washington Commanders, some traveling from outside the country to attend.
One fan traveled from Ottawa, Canada, to attend the game.
Fans wore Honolulu blue and gold, and the game featured new merchandise and new food and drink options.
Kids Day draws young fans
The Lions hosted their annual Kids Day event at the game. A young fan said, “I like watching football. They’re a great team and I want to be on their team.”
Pride Plaza offers free family activities
Pride Plaza, a free event area, was open to fans before the game. The plaza included activities testing fans’ agility, strength and brawn.
One fan said, “We feel strong. We feel like She-Hulk, darling. So I said, ‘Girls, we got this.’”
University of Michigan-Dearborn junior Keon Brooks attended the game with his father. “We want to watch the new guys, the guys that got drafted to see who’s going to make the team, how they’re going to perform, well against what competitions,” Brooks said.
Pride Plaza will be open to the public before every Lions home game this season.
One fan said, “It’s hype. It’s high. I’m having a great time.”
What’s next
The Lions play their next preseason game Saturday in Indianapolis. They return to Detroit for their home opener against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 13. Pride Plaza activities and giveaways will be available on Brush Street ahead of that game.
