Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium was a timely reminder that simply spending your way out of trouble is easier said than done.
Certainly, the Lilywhites will improve gradually as the season progresses, but after a summer of immense spending, it was a worrying start. Roberto De Zerbi admitted after the game that his players lacked the spirit to compete with Brentford players.
Nonetheless, the transfer window is still open, and the N17 chiefs could bring further reinforcements to aid De Zerbi’s squad rebuild. Savio became the club’s seventh summer signing after he made his big-money move from Manchester City on Tuesday afternoon. Omar Marmoush is set to follow Savio into the club soon, but it looks like Spurs are looking to add an out-and-out No.9.
Tottenham interested in Marseille striker
According to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Tottenham are interested in signing Marseille forward Amine Gouiri. Everton are also keen on the player, as David Moyes wants to bring in a centre-forward, with Beto being linked with a move to Fiorentina in the ongoing window.
Amine Gouiri could well be moved on by Marseille, who are cash-strapped and want to sell to meet DNCG requirements. The Algerian international is one of Marseille’s prized assets and could fetch a higher price.
He enjoyed a decent 2025/26 season in Ligue 1, netting eight goals and supplying three assists in 22 appearances for Marseille. And the forward has started the new campaign with a bang, netting a brace in the opening weekend 4-0 thrashing of Strasbourg.
Amine Gouiri could be a decent squad rotational option
Tottenham started the new season with Richarlison spearheading the attack. The Brazilian international was the club’s top scorer with 12 goals last term, but with him entering the final year of his contract, the Hotspur Way chiefs must cash him in and get a decent fee.
As far as Tottenham’s interest in Gouiri goes, it makes sense. The 26-year-old may not have prior Premier League experience, but he has proven himself in Ligue 1 with OGC Nice, Rennes and Marseille. The French-born Algerian has netted 23 goals in 43 appearances in total for Marseille, which is proof that he knows where the back of the net is.
Also, Gouiri can operate off the left and centrally as a No.9, and such versatility will only boost De Zerbi’s attacking options to compete in the Premier League. If the price is right, Spurs must pounce on the forward’s signing.
