Chelsea predicted XI vs Luton: Estevao and Welbeck start

Chelsea host League One side Luton Town in the Carabao Cup second round on Thursday night, giving Xabi Alonso an early opportunity to use the depth of his rebuilt squad.

Monday’s 3-2 victory over Fulham was followed by recovery work for the starters, while Chelsea confirmed that those who received fewer minutes returned to the grass at Cobham.

With Brighton visiting Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Alonso is unlikely to ask Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and João Pedro to start twice in four days. Significant rotation should therefore be expected.

Penders handed competitive Chelsea opportunity

Mike Penders was the substitute goalkeeper at Craven Cottage but could replace Robert Sánchez for Chelsea’s first domestic cup tie of the season.

Starting the 21-year-old would not necessarily represent a permanent change in the hierarchy. It would, however, give Penders an opportunity to apply pressure after Sánchez received a four in ReadChelsea’s Fulham player ratings.

Wesley Fofana is available again after missing the league opener through suspension and should enter the back three. Maxence Lacroix could remain centrally to provide experience, with Josh Acheampong completing the defence.

Lacroix helped shape two Chelsea goals against Fulham, with his aggressive movement from defence becoming an important part of Alonso’s system.

Palestra and Chavarria push for full debuts

Marco Palestra missed the Fulham victory after suffering a minor training setback. Alonso indicated that the Italian’s problem was not serious, leaving him with a chance of making his competitive debut at right wing-back.

Pep Chavarria could receive the same opportunity on the left after being named among the substitutes on Monday.

Enzo Fernández only appeared during the second half at Craven Cottage following his late return to pre-season. Thursday offers Alonso an opportunity to build the midfielder’s fitness by starting him alongside Valentin Barco.

Roméo Lavia and Reece James formed the midfield partnership against Fulham, so both could be protected ahead of Brighton.

Estevao and Welbeck lead rotated attack

Chelsea’s first-choice front three all scored against Fulham, but their early understanding should not prevent Alonso from rotating.

Estevao is the leading candidate to replace Palmer after beginning the league opener on the bench. Pedro Neto can operate from the opposite side, although Jamie Gittens and Geovany Quenda provide further options.

Danny Welbeck should lead the attack and make his first competitive Chelsea start.

The experienced striker remained unused at Fulham, while Liam Delap is completing a £50million move to Nottingham Forest and Nicolas Jackson continues to attract interest from Aston Villa.

Welbeck’s movement could help Estevao and Neto attack the spaces around Luton’s defence. His selection would also allow João Pedro to recover before facing former club Brighton on Sunday.

Alonso has enough depth to change almost his entire team without selecting an experimental side.

Predicted Chelsea XI: Penders; Acheampong, Lacroix, Fofana; Palestra, Fernández, Barco, Chavarria; Estevao, Neto; Welbeck.
