Back in 2023, Pittsburgh Steelers DL Cam Heyward joked about catching a touchdown pass from his brother, Connor, on an episode of his Not Just Football podcast. While Connor, now with the Raiders, did attempt a pass that season, it was intended for TE Darnell Washington in a 21-18 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 14.

While Cam won’t have the chance to catch a pass from his brother, he still wants to find the end zone once in his career.
“I do need a touchdown before I hang it up,” Heyward said. “No touchdowns in 15 years, but maybe 16.”
The conversation came up during an episode of his Not Just Football podcast with Christian Kuntz and Chris Boswell when talking about fake field goal attempts.
There are ways for Heyward to score organically, if he’s able to recover a fumble or take back an interception to the house. Heyward only has two interceptions in his career, with the most recent one coming in 2021, so it’s not going to be an easy task.
The Steelers could also get creative and find a way to scheme a touchdown for him. Whether that’s lining up on offense and running for one or catching one (he did line up on offense at times during the tush push last year) or having one come off a fake field goal, there’s at least the chance the team can find a way to get Heyward in the end zone.
Of course, it’s not something the team is regularly going to scheme up, and it’s probably something that would only happen if they comfortably have the win in hand. Heyward wouldn’t be the first defensive player to score a touchdown on offense if that’s indeed how it happens. Former Texans EDGE JJ Watt had three career touchdown receptions, while former Steelers, Patriots, and Chiefs OLB Mike Vrabel caught 12 touchdown passes during his career.
But the Steelers have never tried that with Cam Heyward, and it would really involve Mike McCarthy and company going deep in their bag of tricks. It would be a cool moment for Heyward and the Steelers, but the chance of the team getting him involved offensively feels rather unlikely.
It’s one of those never-say-never situations, though, and we’ll see if Heyward can get his long-awaited touchdown during the 2026 season to end the 15-year drought.
