Mixed injury news after a strong opening result often leaves managers balancing short-term availability with longer-term recoveries. Positive updates on a major summer signing ease concerns before a difficult away fixture. Extended absences for first-choice defenders explain recent recruitment.
Players who want to continue despite discomfort show the character coaches value. Cautious timescales for those yet to rejoin group training keep expectations realistic. Managed rehabilitation programmes prioritise full recovery over rushed returns.

Mikel Arteta has delivered an encouraging update on Bruno Guimaraes ahead of Monday’s trip to Aston Villa. The midfielder missed the 3-0 win over Coventry after picking up a thigh issue in the Community Shield but is not expected to be out for weeks.
“No, no, no,” Arteta said. “We expect that not to be weeks at all. Let’s see how he evolves this week. He didn’t even want to stop. He wanted to carry on. Now we start to understand the character of the player, but I don’t expect that to be a big issue.”

Guimaraes could therefore be available for the Villa Park clash on 31 August if his recovery continues as hoped.
Jurrien Timber remains further away. The Dutch defender has not trained with the group since minor groin surgery in the summer. “I said in the next few weeks,” Arteta explained. “He’s not trained with the group yet.” A return in September is the current expectation.
William Saliba faces the longest absence. Arsenal confirmed surgery is not recommended for his back injury and that he has begun a managed recovery programme. The club said he is expected to be “out of action for an extended period,” with a potential return in winter 2026.
Ezri Konsa’s arrival from Aston Villa provides extra defensive cover. Supporters will take heart from the Guimaraes news while remaining patient over the two defenders. Arsenal continue their title defence with a relatively healthy squad for the immediate fixtures. Further updates will follow as the players progress through their rehabilitation.
