For as large as the Pittsburgh Steelers fanbase and media following can be, just about everyone can express their opinion on how the team should operate from a personnel standpoint, but sometimes the weight and influence of certain individuals can matter more than others. Look no further than the former franchise starter and two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who recently shared his thoughts on how the Steelers’ current quarterback room should pan out.
“If I’m a coach or a GM, I’m doing everything I can to keep [Will Howard and Drew Allar],” Roethlisberger said on Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger. “I’m keeping both of them. I don’t think you put either one on practice squad because I think someone will scoop them up. You’re either keeping all four or you try to put Mason on practice squad and see if you can find a way to keep him, too.”
This drew criticism from some fans, as the relationship between Roethlisberger and Rudolph is infamously strained, which leads many to believe the two-time Super Bowl champion’s opinion on his former backup to be skewed.
Howard struggled in Week 2 of the preseason, throwing a pair of interceptions while playing the entire first half. Allar went 11-of-23 for 110 yards in the second half while Rudolph was given the night off.
The Steelers will close out their preseason against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, and then begin to make those difficult roster cutdowns.

Howard and Allar will look to continue making an impression when they face the Bills at the new Highmark Stadium. Although neither will be a starter anytime soon (barring unforeseen injury to Aaron Rodgers), their capability behind Rodgers will be fascinating to watch.
