Liverpool’s academy is one of the biggest parts of what makes the football club so special.
Throughout the club’s history, Anfield has seen some incredible players come through the youth system and go on to become Liverpool legends.
From Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones, the academy has consistently produced players capable of reaching the very highest level.
And even though Liverpool are spending huge money on established stars, the importance of developing their own players hasn’t disappeared.
In fact, it could become even more important.
Nyoni and Ngumoha leading the next generation
Right now, two names in particular are generating plenty of excitement.
Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha.
Both youngsters are highly regarded within the club and are expected to have opportunities under Andoni Iraola this season.
We’ve already seen glimpses of what they can offer.
Nyoni has the technical ability and composure to operate in midfield, while Ngumoha possesses the sort of pace and directness that can cause defenders serious problems.
The challenge now is making sure Liverpool continue producing players behind them.
Because the academy cannot stand still.
Liverpool looking towards The Gambia
That’s why the arrival of Musa Jatta Bajaha on trial at Liverpool is so interesting.
The Gambian midfielder has reportedly been given the opportunity to train at Anfield while Liverpool assess whether he has the potential to become part of their academy setup.
And the youngster appears to have been enjoying the experience.
Bajaha shared a picture on his Instagram story showing himself beside Dominik Szoboszlai’s locker.
For a young player, that must be an incredible experience.
One minute you’re developing your career in The Gambia.
The next you’re standing inside Liverpool’s first-team environment.
Liverpool’s academy is becoming increasingly global
Football has changed.
The best academies aren’t simply recruiting from their local areas anymore.
Clubs are searching all over the world for the next generation of talent.
Liverpool have traditionally had a strong connection with local football, but there’s no reason why they can’t combine that with global recruitment.
The goal should be simple:
Find the best young players and give them a pathway.
And if Bajaha can impress during his trial, Liverpool could have discovered another player with significant potential.
Why trials matter
A trial doesn’t guarantee a contract.
And it certainly doesn’t mean Liverpool have decided that Bajaha is the next superstar.
It’s an opportunity for the club to see the player up close.
How does he train?
How does he react to coaching?
How does he handle the intensity?
How does he perform against players of a higher standard?
Those things are difficult to judge from watching clips or statistics alone.
That’s why bringing a youngster into the environment can be so valuable.
Liverpool can’t afford to fall behind
This is perhaps the biggest reason why the move makes sense.
Other Premier League clubs are investing heavily in their academies.
The competition for elite young talent is becoming fierce.
Liverpool can’t simply rely on their reputation and assume the best youngsters will always choose Anfield.
They have to keep improving.
They have to keep scouting.
And they have to keep finding players before everyone else discovers them.
The academy remains part of Liverpool’s identity
For all the money Liverpool have spent this summer, I still think supporters will always have a special connection with academy players.
There’s something different about watching a youngster come through the system.
You see them develop.
You watch them make their debut.
You watch them grow into first-team footballers.
And when they eventually score in front of the Kop, it feels even more special.
That’s why players like Nyoni and Ngumoha are so exciting.
And it’s why Liverpool should continue looking for the next ones.
Could Bajaha be the next one?
It’s far too early to make any bold predictions.
A trial is only the beginning.
But the fact that Liverpool are willing to bring young talent from around the world into their academy environment tells you something about the club’s ambitions.
Liverpool don’t just want to build a team for today.
They need to build one for tomorrow as well.
Maybe Musa Jatta Bajaha will become the next academy success story.
Maybe he won’t.
But Liverpool will never know unless they give players like him the opportunity.
And somewhere among all these trials and academy signings could be the next Gerrard, Carragher, Jones or Alexander-Arnold.
That’s the beauty of Liverpool’s academy.
