Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie against Luton Town offers Xabi Alonso more than an opportunity to progress into the third round.
Thursday’s match is also the first genuine opening for several squad players to challenge the team that defeated Fulham 3-2 on Monday.
Alonso is expected to rotate heavily with Brighton visiting Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Five players could use the cup tie to make the head coach reconsider his Premier League selection.

Penders and Fofana can challenge Chelsea defence
Mike Penders watched the Fulham victory from the bench, but the 21-year-old should receive an opportunity against Luton.
Robert Sánchez was given a four in ReadChelsea’s Fulham player ratings after his mistake contributed to Josh King’s equaliser.
One difficult match will not automatically remove the Spaniard from the team, but an assured Penders performance would increase the debate around Alonso’s goalkeeper.
The Belgian must demonstrate that he can provide composure with the ball while dealing with the physical and aerial examination Luton are likely to offer.
Wesley Fofana also has an opportunity after missing Monday’s match through suspension.
Josh Acheampong, Maxence Lacroix and Levi Colwill started at Craven Cottage. Lacroix was directly involved in Chelsea’s opening two goals, while Alonso has described Colwill as one of the world’s best centre-backs.
That leaves Fofana with little room for a quiet return. His speed and ability to defend aggressively could suit Alonso’s high defensive line, but he must prove that he can be relied upon consistently.
Palestra and Fernandez can change midfield picture
Marco Palestra missed the league opener after suffering a minor training setback.
If he is cleared to face Luton, the Italian will have his first competitive opportunity to show what he can offer.
Malo Gusto started at right wing-back against Fulham, while Jorrel Hato occupied the opposite flank. Palestra’s direct running and ability to operate on either side could give Alonso another solution before Brighton.
Enzo Fernández has a different point to prove.
The Argentina international only appeared during the second half on Monday after returning late to pre-season following the World Cup.
Roméo Lavia and Reece James started in midfield and helped Chelsea control important periods of the game. A sharp hour from Fernández against Luton could put him back into contention to start on Sunday, regardless of the continuing Manchester City speculation.
Estevao can create Alonso attack dilemma
Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and João Pedro all scored against Fulham, giving Alonso little reason to break up his new front three.
Estevao therefore needs to make any cup opportunity count.
The Brazilian can play from the right or operate inside as one of the two attacking midfielders behind a striker. His close control and willingness to attack defenders would give Chelsea a different route through Luton’s expected defensive block.
Palmer remains one of the first names on Alonso’s teamsheet, but Sunday’s game against Brighton comes only three days after the cup tie.
An influential Estevao display could earn him more than substitute minutes against the Seagulls.
Chelsea’s squad depth means progression should be the minimum expectation against League One opposition. For Penders, Fofana, Palestra, Fernández and Estevao, the match also represents their first chance to change Alonso’s Premier League hierarchy.
