Chelsea are advancing in club-to-club talks with Atalanta for Honest Ahanor after agreeing personal terms with the highly-rated defender, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Blues opened discussions over the 18-year-old earlier this week but have now taken another significant step towards a potential deal.
Romano reports that Chelsea have reached an agreement with Ahanor over personal terms and are progressing negotiations with Atalanta, where their strong relationship following the Marco Palestra transfer could help.

Chelsea advance Honest Ahanor transfer talks
Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea are now advancing talks with Atalanta after initially exploring a move for Ahanor on Tuesday.
The teenager is viewed by Chelsea as a player for the future rather than necessarily an immediate first-team addition.
That explains another important part of the latest update.
Chelsea are still deciding the best development pathway for Ahanor should an agreement be completed, meaning his immediate destination has not yet been settled.
Previous reporting said Atalanta had already rejected two approaches for the defender this summer, with Brighton also showing interest. FootballTransfers detailed Chelsea’s initial Ahanor talks on Tuesday.
Ahanor is primarily a left-footed centre-back but can also operate at left-back, giving Chelsea another versatile defensive prospect.
Palestra relationship could help Chelsea
Chelsea have already completed significant business with Atalanta this summer.
Marco Palestra moved to Stamford Bridge earlier in the window and has quickly impressed Xabi Alonso.
ReadChelsea recently covered Alonso’s belief that Palestra gives Chelsea “something different”, with the Italian pushing for a major role this season.
That established relationship between the clubs could now prove useful during negotiations for Ahanor.
Chelsea have simultaneously been reducing the number of senior defenders available to Alonso, with the Blues working to reshape an overcrowded centre-back group following several summer departures.
Ahanor would represent a different type of investment.
Personal terms are already settled.
Chelsea must now find an agreement with Atalanta and decide where the 18-year-old would continue his development if the transfer is completed.
