Adonai Mitchell arrived in the New York Jets with plenty to prove after an uneven start to his NFL career. Now, the conversation around the young receiver is changing, and it is not just coming from outside the building.

Geno Smith sees something in Mitchell that could make the Jets’ offense far more dangerous. The quarterback’s confidence in his young target, combined with Mitchell’s work habits and strong training camp, is giving the former second-round pick a real shot at finally breaking out.

Smith is not putting a ceiling on what Mitchell can become. The veteran QB has watched the receiver consistently put in extra work after practice, and that effort has helped convince him that Mitchell has the tools to become one of the league’s better receivers.

“Sky’s the limit for AD, man. He’s got all the physical tools. He works extremely hard. You know, he’s always on the jugs. After practice, he’s gonna go in there, get on the jugs, he’s gonna do extra work. And he, like I said, man, he has everything, all the ability to go out there and be one of the better receivers in the game. I really, I really think he can be that. Obviously, it’s my job to make sure I put the ball in his hands and let him go do his thing….”

That endorsement carries weight because Mitchell’s NFL career hasn’t exactly gone according to plan. The former second-round pick spent his first season and a half with the Indianapolis Colts before arriving in New York as part of the Sauce Gardner trade last November. In eight games with the Jets, he caught 24 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns.

Those numbers weren’t spectacular, yet the context matters. Mitchell was playing in an offense that struggled badly at QB, while his opportunity increased when Garrett Wilson was sidelined. Now, with Wilson healthy and Smith behind center, Mitchell could have a much cleaner path to production.

He is also earning that opportunity. The Jets’ offensive coordinator, Frank Reich, has been impressed by Mitchell’s confidence and modesty, while training camp reports have repeatedly noted his progress, which has helped him earn the coaches’ and quarterbacks’ trust.

And trust might be the most important thing here. Mitchell doesn’t have to replace Wilson as the Jets’ No. 1 receiver. He already has that spot. They just need another solid complement who can create a mismatch when the defense focuses on stopping Wilson.

It seems that Smith is sure that Mitchell is the right player for this task. And his role as one of the receivers is crucial. Indeed, he is supposed to bring stability to the Jets’ offense full of young players, and Mitchell will probably benefit the most from playing alongside an experienced quarterback who knows how to make the most out of him.
