8 players could miss Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest at Anfield

Liverpool rescued a point in their opening Premier League game of the 2026/27 season. Trailing 2-1 against Newcastle United in the 96th minute, Victor Munoz burst into the box and was brought down by Lewis Hall to win a penalty.

With the last kick of the game, Dominik Szoboszlai kept his cool and thumped the spot-kick into the roof of the net to silence the majority inside St James’ Park.

Andoni Iraola will be encouraged by his side twice fighting back from losing positions and will hope to secure his first league win as Liverpool head coach when the Reds host Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday.

One negative from the draw was a fresh injury concern surrounding Federico Chiesa. The Italian missed the trip to Newcastle due to a fitness issue after sitting out training, and it remains unclear whether he will return at the weekend.

Joe Gomez is still sidelined with an injury he sustained in the pre-season win over Sunderland last month. Hugo Ekitike has not played since rupturing his Achilles against Paris Saint-Germain in April and could remain sidelined for the rest of the calendar year.

Conor Bradley is another long-term absentee after suffering a serious knee injury against Arsenal in January at the Emirates Stadium. Although he avoided an ACL injury, the right-back required surgery to repair ligament and bone damage in his left knee.

Giovanni Leoni suffered an ACL injury on his Liverpool debut against Southampton in the Carabao Cup and is expected to be sidelined for several months.

For Nottingham Forest, Morgan Gibbs-White missed Tuesday’s EFL Cup defeat to Leeds United with a knee injury and is a major doubt for Saturday’s clash.

Ryan Yates has also missed Forest’s first two games of the season through injury, while Nicolo Savona continues to recover from a knee problem and has no clear return date.
