Bradford City stun Burnley on penalties at a lively Valley Parade
League One Bradford City caused an upset by dumping Championship side Burnley out of the Carabao Cup on penalties. Both sides spurned presentable chances to win the game inside 90 minutes, but with nothing separating them, the tie went to a shootout in front of 20,000 fans at a lively Valley Parade.
Adam Phillips struck the winning penalty for the Bantams after Switzerland international Zeki Amdouni had hit the post for Burnley, and Jacob Bruun Larsen's effort was saved by Jon McCracken. Bradford, who are the early pacesetters in League One and have yet to concede a goal so far this season, will find out their third-round opponents in Wednesday night's draw.
Newcastle survive fightback to see off West Brom in five-goal thriller
Newcastle United progressed to the third round of the Carabao Cup with a 3-2 win over West Bromwich Albion at St James' Park, in a match that swung back and forth throughout.
West Brom struck first as Price converted from the penalty spot to give the visitors an early lead. Newcastle responded through Toure, who levelled the scores, before Barnes turned the game in the hosts' favour to make it 2-1. Price restored parity for West Brom with a second spot-kick, but Barnes struck again to seal the points and send Newcastle through with a 3-2 victory.
Everton hat-trick hero Barry inspires comfortable win over Preston
Everton eased into the next round with a comprehensive 4-0 win away at Preston North End. Barry was the standout performer, netting a hat-trick to lead the Toffees' attack, while Johnson also got on the scoresheet with his first goal for the club. Preston were unable to find a way back into the contest as Everton controlled the tie from start to finish.
Spurs put five past Charlton as Savio marks debut with double
Tottenham Hotspur cruised into the third round with a 5-1 win over Charlton Athletic. Moore opened the scoring to break the deadlock before Solanke doubled Spurs' advantage. Danso added a third with his first touch after coming on, and Savio marked his debut in style with a brace of his own. Charlton's Jones grabbed a consolation for the visitors, but Spurs were always in control on the night.
